SUMMARY:“Everyone Can Save a Life” Hands-only CPR
DESCRIPTION:February is American Heart Month and the kick-off of the American Heart Association’s Go Red for Women Initiative. To show its support and to help prevent death due to cardiac arrest\, the Long Lake Fire Department is co-hosting a hands-only CPR training and fundraising event. The event is family-friendly and open to the entire public\, not just the Long Lake Fire Department’s service area. \n“Heart disease is the number one killer of Americans\, and yet 70 percent of Americans feel helpless to act during a cardiac emergency because they don’t know how to administer CPR or they’re afraid of hurting the victim\,” said Scott Spinks\, Long Lake Deputy Chief\, full-time paramedic\, and the event’s lead CPR trainer. “When a person has a cardiac arrest\, survival depends on immediately receiving CPR from someone nearby. The more we expose the public to hands-on CPR\, the more lives we save.” \nThe U.S. Fire Administration estimates that nearly two-thirds (64%) of reported calls required emergency medical services (EMS) and rescue services from fire departments. “The majority of the calls we respond to are medical calls and that includes heart-related emergencies. Because we are committed to keeping our community safe\, we know that we cannot continue to solely focus on fire safety training\, even though that is what we are known for\,” said Mike Heiland\, Long Lake Chief. “Based on the success of last year’s inaugural event\, we feel it is critically important to continue to offer Hands-only CPR to our community.” \nAccording to the American Heart Association\, about 90 percent out-of-hospital cardiac arrests are fatal. CPR\, especially if performed immediately\, can double\, or triple a cardiac arrest victim’s chance of survival. \n“As the wife of a firefighter\, I know that if a person is called on to give CPR in an emergency\, they’re most likely trying to save the life of someone they love: a child\, a spouse\, a parent or a friend\,” said Kelly Grady\, co-host of the Everyone Can Save a Life Event and a 2024 AHA Minnesota Woman of Impact Ambassador. “My dad recently died following a heart-related indecent at his home\, so it’s important to me to educate others about the importance of CPR.” \nWhile the event is free\, each attendee is suggested to donate to the American Heart Association. \n“The AHA has done amazing work leading the initiatives to ensure all 911 operators are trained to guide a caller through hands-only CPR\,” said Spinks. “Their efforts to bridge the gap from an emergency call to the arrival of emergency services increases the chances of survival. Your donation will directly benefit the AHA’s efforts!” \nNo one can predict when a cardiac arrest will exactly occur\, but preparedness in such an emergency is critical to saving precious lives. Everyone Can Save a Life event is open to all ages\, but CPR training is available for those nine and up. The fire department will have a bouncy house on site for kids and Sparky the Fire Dog will be there to meet and greet and pose for photos.

SUMMARY:Chanhassen Dinner Theaters Pro-Poses with "Prom Re-Do"
DESCRIPTION:What: Chanhassen Dinner Theatres introduces “Prom Re-Do” — a night for anyone who’d like another shot at their high school formal. Make it more fun and come in your best promwear — get pics with the photographer at the step and repeat\, enjoy refreshments\, dance to music before the show and enjoy a glass of rainbow sherbet punch from the punch bowl\, followed by an epic night with dinner and the hit Broadway show\, “The Prom.” Prom Royalty winners will be chosen from the audience. \nWhy: Consider this your prom-posal for a Prom Re-Do. Didn’t get invited to prom? Didn’t go with who you really wanted to ask? Had a wretched prom night? Or maybe you didn’t meet the love of your life until many years after high school? YOU are invited—in the words of the show’s heroine—to “build a prom for everyone!” Rent a tux or just wear a suit. Pull that old prom dress out of mothballs … and if the puffy shoulders are feeling a bit snug\, find another one (thrift store outing\, anyone?) OR just come as you are\, as you’re comfortable\, and with whom you want to be with — and that is the whole point. \nWho and Where: Chanhassen Dinner Theatres\, the beloved Twin Cities institution and longest-running dinner theater in the country\, has been putting on the ultimate “dinner and a show” for more than 50 years. Now\, the hit Broadway musical\, “The Prom\,” is on stage through June 10. Come dressed for a special night at The Prom where anyone attending can be King\, Queen — or anything in between! \nWhen: Thursday\, May 25\, at 5:15 p.m.\, join the pre-theatre reception in The Club with a cash bar\, complimentary refreshments (including Rainbow Sherbet Punch) and a DJ. Pick up a pre-purchased wristlet corsage or boutonniere. (Ask the box office for more information when you buy tickets.) Dinner seating begins at 6 p.m.\, and the show at 8. \nTickets: If you accept the Chanhassen Dinner Theatres Prom-posal\, pick up tickets for Prom Re-Do and Dinner’s On Us (that’s free dinner for you and your guest)! Use code PROMREDO to get $63 tickets for dinner and a show. And remember\, pre-order a corsage when you buy tickets.

SUMMARY:Celebrate Earth Day
DESCRIPTION:To commemorate Earth Day on April 22\, the City of Wayzata is hosting the Champion Tree Contest. Participants are encouraged to visit public spaces around the city (residents can submit trees from their private property) to identify some of the community’s largest trees. Determining factors include the height of the tree and/or the diameter at breast height (DBH)\, which is a standard measure method for identifying tree trunk diameter. \nSubmissions for the Champion Tree Contest are due April 22nd (Earth Day) and the winners will be announced via social media on April 28th (Arbor Day). A prize is in the offing! Additional contest rules are available at wayzata.org. \nCertified arborist Bennett Myhran\, the City of Wayzata’s forester\, speaks to the importance of the event. “It draws attention to the world around us\,” he says. The city will also hold another event on May 20 during which volunteers will plant a variety of bareroot trees in Wayzata. “We’re always working toward this goal of expanding the canopy of trees\,” he says. “We want to regulate how trees are dealt with privately and also work on diversification of the tree population.”
