June is, unarguably, one of the loveliest months of the year. When I was a kid, June signaled the seasonal opening of the back deck, where my family ate dinner most nights during the summer. The patio table was always laden with summer-only delicacies: sweet corn, grilled steak, cucumber salad, raspberries and maybe even homemade ice cream for dessert, churned by my grandpa’s steady hand in an old-fashioned crank freezer.
June also meant the return of my favorite summer pastimes in Madison, Wisconsin, my hometown: the downtown farmers’ market (cheese curds for breakfast, anyone?) and the Wisconsin Chamber Orchestra’s annual concert series on the Capitol square. On a picnic blanket on the Capitol lawn, I would lie back and listen to the summery ballets of Copland and the booming ending of Tchaikovsky’s 1812 Overture. And, of course, there was always a picnic.
Food tastes better in the fresh air.
This month, we’re featuring everything you need for a perfect summer party, whether you’re a host or a guest: cocktail recipes for the patio, two fabulous blogs by local foodies, the Mound farmers’ market, a benefit event that’s all about wine, and a round-up of destinations for activities and good eats around the lake. What could be tastier than that?
I wish you a delicious June, spent in the fresh air, gathered around your family’s table.
