Happy St. Patrick’s Day. Even if you’re not Irish, can we admit that leprechauns, rainbows and pots of gold give us a great excuse to celebrate? Other than a pint of Guinness, another popular way to indulge in St. Paddy’s Day cheer is with the infamous Shamrock Shake from a popular fast food burger joint.

Few things are more instantly gratifying than a frosty, mint milkshake, but it does come at a price. Each small Shamrock Shake includes 460 calories and 63 grams of sugar. St. Patrick’s Day may only come around once per year, but, given the fact that most Americans already consume well over the recommended 30–40 grams of added sugar per day, we should consider some alternatives.

Try this healthier version. It could not only satisfy your urge to splurge on St. Patrick’s Day, but every day throughout the year and fill you up with healthy energy-boosting ingredients.

St. Patrick’s Day Shamrock Shake Swap

  • 1 scoop vanilla protein powder
  • 1 1/2 cups unsweetened almond milk
  • 1 cup spinach
  • ¼ of an avocado
  • ½ tsp. peppermint extract
  • ½ tsp. vanilla extract
  • ice
  • Lily’s chocolate mint baking chips (optional)

Blend all ingredients, and top with baking chips if wanted.
