“I got lucky with the position of the sun’s reflection …” —Lisa Tomassen

“A family tradition of going on springtime ice breaking missions started when my kids were 2 and 4 years old. We’d venture out in our canoe and chop away at the chunks of floating ice. It’s our way of ‘urging’ winter to release its grip on the lake. In this photo, my son (8 years old at the time) saw a fresh, thin sheet of ice had developed overnight one November morning, and he thought it was the perfect opportunity for some ice breaking before the lake froze over for good … I love that it’s not immediately obvious that he is kayaking through a thin sheet of ice. It takes a moment to realize what the angled shapes floating in the water are. I got lucky with the position of the sun’s reflection, which provided a beautiful backdrop for my young adventurer.”
