The Annual Klondike Dog Derby is set for February 3 and 4 as racers charge down the Water Street, race 40 miles on frozen Lake Minnetonka and finish back in downtown Excelsior.
The first day of the event will include canine athletes receiving their veterinary check-ups, Hug-a-Husky and Meet-the-Mushers events downtown. Sled dog rides will be offered in the Excelsior Commons. On February 4, the opening ceremony will begin at 9:30 a.m. on Water Street, and the race commences at 10 a.m. The awards ceremony will be at 5 p.m., and don’t miss the wrap party at Excelsior Brewing Co. with live music.
The Klondike Dog Derby is 100 percent volunteer run and supported by sponsors and fundraisers. One of its fundraisers this year was the annual Raise the Woof event at Unmapped Brewing Co. in November. Five-time Iditarod champion Dallas Seavey was on hand for two presentations and to meet visitors. A silent auction was also part of the event with proceeds aimed to cover the cost of producing the race. Learn more at klondikedogderby.com.
