Veterans, youth and community members make waves.
The Minnesota Wakesurf Championship (MNWSC) returns this month after being held virtually last year, and it’s more than just a competition.
“People show up to wakesurf but not to wakesurf all day,” says Andy Weigman, MNWSC organizer. Partnered with the Spirit of the Lakes festival, the MNWSC will be held July 16–17 at Surfside Park in Mound.
Alongside the main competition on July 17, which boasts around 60 participants yearly, the two-day event will feature many other boating and water sports activities, like the Boated Movie. There will be space for shoreside spectators during the competition, though ticketing may be implemented for events to ensure compliance with COVID guidelines.
In addition to the community activities, the MNWSC also partners with Wake for Warriors. Through this partnership, MNWSC raises money for veterans via chartered boat rides while also giving the veterans opportunities to spend time on the lake. MNWSC will also partner with Inner City Surf for the first time this year, giving Twin Cities youth the chance to get out on the lake, too.
