Personal stylist Jess Burke helps women feel beautiful in their everyday looks.
Shopping can be overwhelming—often, we don’t know where to look, what to look for, or even have time for the whole ordeal. Excelsior-based personal stylist Jess Burke wants to help. Burke minimizes the stress of shopping and helps empower local women to feel confident in every aspect of their lives, starting with their closet.
Burke, a Wisconsin native, is the founder of Well Layered, a personal styling business and fashion blog. She launched Well Layered as a blog in 2017, hoping to help women elevate their personal style by sharing the tricks she uses to get dressed every day. The name Well Layered originated in Burke’s own definition of personal style: “When we layer our clothing, it lends interest, depth and intrigue to our outfit, and it makes the pieces more a part of our personality,” she says. “I really like to encourage people to take the pieces that they own, play with them and layer them in different ways.”
Well Layered offers three styling packages. The Base Layer was created for women who need shorter-term styling advice for events like family photo sessions or bridal showers. The Right Layer package is geared toward a client who’s ready to dive in to the personal stylist experience. “They probably haven’t evaluated their personal style in a while and might be ready to invest in a more comprehensive wardrobe overhaul,” Burke says. This package includes an in-home closet edit and a personalized style guide, giving clients all of the elements needed to round out their wardrobe.
The Full Layer Package includes a two-hour in-store shopping experience with Burke and a three-hour styling session, where she helps clients create outfits, building a look book for reference throughout the seasons. All of the packages are customizable. “I really want to make it affordable and achievable for any woman, no matter what stage of her life she’s in,” Burke says.
“I love working with clients to help them be the most beautiful and confident version of themselves, whether it’s in the workplace, at home or in any element of their lives,” she says. She stresses quality over quantity. “I don’t encourage clients to buy a ton of things. That’s not my goal,” she says. “My goal is to get them a closet where every single piece is loved, gets a ton of use and fits them perfectly.”
Burke collaborates with small business owners and boutiques to create fun experiences for women in the Twin Cities. Last fall, Burke partnered with Elite Repeat boutique and Urban Growler, a women-owned brewery, to put on a fashion show that benefitted Dress for Success, a nonprofit organization that provides professional attire for low-income women. Through these events and her business, Burke wants to help women understand how personal style can elevate their lives.
“Personal style has been massively impactful in my ability to be a confident woman, and I know after talking to so many women, that they just get stuck and think they don’t deserve to spend money on themselves when it comes to their closets,” Burke says. “But personal style is a piece of the self-care puzzle.”
