A green heron on a dock

A green heron makes a perfect photo subject.

Each month, we feature one of the winning photos from our 2019 Lens on Lake Minnetonka photo contest. This month, we asked photographer Kristyn Hewitt to tell us about “Browsing for Breakfast,” which received second place in our Wildlife & Nature category.

When and where did you take the photo?
I took this picture out on my dock on June 29 around 6 a.m. I had trouble sleeping, so I got up and went down with my camera in hand to watch the sunrise and the lake come alive. Sunrise soon became my favorite time of day on the lake because it is so quiet, peaceful and surrounded by so much beauty. That particular morning, the green heron landed on my neighbor’s dock. I had never seen a green heron and couldn’t believe how close it landed.

What kind of camera did you use?
I used the Canon 5D mark 3 and my lens was the Tamron 150-600 mm G2.

Start collecting your photos to submit to our 2020 Lens on Lake Minnetonka contest! We accept submissions in August.
