Interior designer Gayle Crummer knew the home had potential. Located in Orono, it had wonderful space, a charming villa exterior and elegant 11-foot ceilings. But the house was also limiting for the family of four who had just purchased it.

The man cave. For many women, the term conjures up images of a dark basement hole-in-the-wall filled with cigar smoke, old sports trophies, bad movies, and a college buddy or two.

“It’s not your traditional lake view,” admits Paul Walser, “but we like it.” He’s speaking of the unique 1910 Wayzata cottage he and his family purchased three years ago, perched on a verdant slope of land above a busy marina, public beach, volleyball courts and a bike trail.

After several years of living abroad in Switzerland, Chris and Diahann Potter began plans to move back to the Twin Cities. Having lived around Lake Minnetonka before, the couple knew they would like to have a place to stay during their extended summer holidays in Minnesota.

Now that retirement is at the top of former WCCO anchor Don Shelby’s to-do list, he and wife Barbara are opting for new digs near the lake.

The wind has always whistled across Warren Krohn’s 700-acre family farm in Nicollet County. Recently the farmer decided to do something about it. Six windmills now stand 160 feet tall on or near his family’s land. When the turbines spin, the wind becomes what Krohn sees as a new cash crop.

“I thrive outside,” enthuses Bradley Agee. “There’s something about being in the moment: in the sun, digging in the soil, placing the plant. It’s about promise—a hopeful gesture—and in this climate, it’s also a lesson in patience.”
